In the 3A state tournament winners bracket game, held on May 11 at the Spanish Fork Sports Complex, the No. 4 seed Carbon Dinos won a decisive victory against the No. 12 seed Manti Templars with a score of 7-1. Carbon Dinos outplayed the defending 3A state champions, Manti Templars, with strong pitching and hitting. The game started in favor of Carbon Dinos as they scored three runs in the first inning, followed by one run each in the second and third innings. Manti Templars scored their only run in the third inning but failed to keep up with Carbon's strong performance. Carbon added two more runs in the fourth inning, extending their lead to 7-1, which remained until the end of the game. Haven Byerly pitched an outstanding game for the Carbon Dinos, recording 16 of her 21 outs with strikeouts. She also had a great performance at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double, home run, and three RBIs. "We were throwing fastball's majority of the time. We played Manti early in the year and we knew coming in they had a hard time hitting even with a fastball. So a lot of times she was just throwing fastballs and moving around the plate, keeping them off balance a little bit by moving it off the plate," said Carbon coach Kirt Nunley. "A few times we do off speed pitches, but most of time or just straight fastballs just moving around the plate." Makayla Scovill also had a great game, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Carbon Dinos. Hannah Daniels was the losing pitcher for the Manti Templars with six strikeouts. The Carbon Dinos will move forward in the winners bracket of the 3A state tournament. Despite the loss, the Manti Templars still have a chance to compete in the tournament as they move to the losers bracket.
