For 47 minutes on Friday, East’s defense absolutely shut down Logan’s high-powered offense. That last minute, however, belonged to the Logan Grizzlies. Logan quarterback D.J. Nelson hit Jameson Hartman on a 40-yard touchdown with 36 seconds remaining as the Grizzlies rallied for the 18-11 victory to claim the 4A state championship at Rice-Eccles Stadium. East had taken the 11-10 lead with 7:21 remaining on a Gavin Van Minde 22-yard field goal. The state title was Logan’s fourth since 1999, while East is still searching for its first championship since 1996. Nelson struggled throughout the game completing just 8 of 23 passes for 135 yards, but he made the big pass when he needed to as Logan capped a perfect 14-0 season. East dominated every statistical category, but two turnovers in the first half proved very costly. The first was a fumble early in the second quarter that set Logan up with a first and goal at the 5-yard line. Nelson punched it in two plays later to give Logan the 10-3 lead. On East’s ensuing possession, quarterback Jason Cook threw an interception in the end zone that spoiled an impressive 15-play drive. East kicked a field on the last-play of the half to cut Logan’s lead to 10-6, and then cut it to 10-8 as Logan snapped a punt out of the end zone with 4:00 left in the third. In the loss, Cook had an excellent game for East completing 9 of 18 passes for 130 yards, while he also rushed for 63 yards.
