In a classic dual between rivals, the Spanish Fork Dons advance to Saturday's 4A championship round with no losses after slipping past Springville 9-7 in a nine-inning thriller. After both teams scored five runs in the first two innings the game remained tied 5-5 after the regulation seven. The Dons scored two runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Dallas Smith and a sacrifice fly by Travis Still to take a 7-5 lead. But the Red Devils kept the drama going when Todd Gillies grounded a two-out bases-loaded double over the third-base bag to score two runs and tie the game. However, Springville stranded the potential winning run at third. The Dons then scored two more in the ninth on an RBI triple by James Lengal and an RBI single by Adam Duke. Once the Dons had the lead, Duke took the mound in the bottom of the ninth and closed the door. Spanish Fork awaits the winner of tonight's second one-loss game between Springville and Timpanogos.
